Samsung BD-E5900 3D WiFi Blu-ray Disc Player (Black) (Electronics) newly tagged "1080p"

We bought the BD-E5900 over the weekend to replace an old JVC DVD player that is prone to skipping. We picked the Samsung due to its long list of features and Samsung's good reputation.

Externally, here are the pros and cons:
Pros: Small and sleek form factor, simple front display, USB interface (useful for updates)
Cons: Limited connection options on back: HDMI output, a coax audio output and a Ethernet input. LED front panel display only 4 characters (small).

Things started poorly when we tried unsuccessfully for 45 minutes to connect it to our wireless network. Sometimes it would see the router, sometimes not. The signal was consistently 2 bars and worked fine with our LG HDTV and a laptop in the same room.

Skipping the networking step, we tried out our first Blu-Ray DVD. It took a long time to load and played for about five seconds before an image came on screen, but when it came up, the image quality was gorgeous. If this is the way it always worked, this would be an excellent player.

Most of our collection is regular DVD, so we ejected the disk and put a DVD in. No video. In fact, our TV reported no signal from the Blu-Ray player. The time counter on the player counted up to 20, but there was no output to the TV, and we couldn't even get to the player's setup GUI. We tried a different DVD, same result. Back to the Blu-Ray. Didn't work. Power cycled. Blu-Ray disk worked and the setup menus were back.

The documentation indicated that firmware updates could resolve playback issues, so we downloaded the latest firmware via laptop from Samsung to a USB stick. Removed the Blu-Ray and power cycled. The setup screen suddenly indicated that a software update was available - after all that, the wireless networking suddenly started working, but the download did not progress very fast, so after a little waiting we switched back to using the USB method per instructions. The firmware upload worked fine by USB.

After rebooting and verifying the updated firmware version, we started over. Blu-ray worked perfectly. Tried the first DVD. Worked fine. Tried the second DVD. Worked fine. Didn't play anything for more than a minute. Figured the firmware update had solved the problem. Now that the wireless network seemed to be working, we tried some of the apps. Some of the apps were decent, but the web browser doesn't support Flash so that nixes a lot of internet video content.

Turned everything off. Came back in an hour to watch a DVD. Powered up, no signal to TV. Tried different disks. When it crashed, we had to power cycle to recover the signal to the TV. It always crashed for a DVD if you started with a DVD. Sometimes the player worked with DVDs after you put a Blu-Ray disk in, but not always.

How on earth did this faulty player pass Samsung's Quality Control?

We returned the player the next day and bought an LG BP620 3D Blu-Ray Player Built-In Wi-Fi - Black.

Comparing the two:
Listed features in spec: Samsung is better (internet/app choices, playback media)

Wireless network behavior: LG also showed issues here like the Samsung when signal strength was only 2 bars. Worked fine in a room with high signal strength. Must be very poor wireless receivers in these players!

Firmware upgrade behavior: About the same. Both worked fine with USB. Wireless methods either didn't work outright or downloads were too slow.

Output options: LG had the same as Samsung plus the old RCA audio/video connections. Nice if you still have an old TV with no HDMI.

Remote control: LG's remote was generally nicer than Samsung's

Front panel: LG's LED display was longer than Samsung's and more user friendly. Also the LG unit has a protective cover for the USB, while Samsung's USB is always exposed.

Operation: LG worked right the first time, unlike the Samsung!

LG 55LM6200 55-Inch Cinema 3D 1080p 120 Hz LED-LCD HDTV with Smart TV and Six Pairs of 3D Glasses (Electronics) newly tagged "1080p"

The LG 47LM 6200 LED edge lit LCD HDTV is perhaps the best current value on the market today! With a razor sharp crystal clear picture, the absolute BEST 3D passive system available and wireless connectivity coupled with web browsing and limitless apps and 3rd party video content providers, you just can't beat it!

I find a 47 inch HDTV to have the SHARPEST picture obtainable. The larger the screen, the farther apart the pixels are placed and the less cohesive the image becomes. Unless you plan to sit 10 ft or so away from your television I honestly think a 55 inch screen doesn't provide the best picture quality. Perhaps when OLED displays with 4k tech become the norm that will change. But for now, all 3 of my LG flat panels are 47 inch and for a good reason.

Let's start with the picture quality. The video 'engine' inside provides you with a beautiful 1080p rendering from any source component. Whether it is your HD DVR , your Blu Ray Player, or your Standard DVD or even VHS machine, the LG 6200 will up-convert your video signal and present you with the best possible rendering. The color decoders LG provides are top notch. With just a small amount of user calibration you can dial in near perfect color rendering and with the correct backlight/contrast/brightness settings you can obtain previously unheard of contrast ratios that look GREAT in any amount of light.

Don't even get me started on passive 3D. For me, it is the only way to watch 3D. No eye strain, no heavy expensive glasses and a fully enveloping, crystal clear viewing experience. And LG has passive 3D down to a science. It is the very best I have seen. Period! (the 6 pairs of included 3D glasses don't hurt one little bit either!)

I can honestly say that a television with this picture quality and feature set would have cost 10 thousand dollars or more just 6 years ago, had it been available then. Build quality, by the way, is excellent. There is nothing cheap or flimsy about this TV in any way. From the HDMI connectors to the included stand it is quality all the way. Just about the only thing I can possibly complain about is the power cable which is attached, but my higher priced LG 7600 also has that little niggle. (in fact, MOST TV's do)

The included web browser and user apps, coupled with the vast array of premium content, You Tube accessibility and more makes this an 'All in One' entertainment center. Use the included magic remote in the same way you would a Wii game controller. The cool factor is high with this LG! Don't forget about wireless connectivity to your internet router. (Look Ma, no wires) Really, it is amazing what you get for your money with this 6200.

I recently purchased their new 7600 which is 2 models up from this one. The only major difference is a slightly different bezel and cabinet styling, plus the 6200 gives you a 120hz refresh rate, verse the 240hz rate of my 7600. Nine times out of ten the average person simply can not SEE the difference between those two refresh rats and let's face it, a 120hz rate is TWICE AS GOOD in that critical department as our old school CRT tube televisions were. The visual quality of the edge lit back-lighting is spectacular and in my opinion LG has edge lit LED TV's nailed! My 7600 has quasi local dimming that LG calls 'LED Plus', but honestly in almost every real world situation it is NOT a necessary thing to get excellent performance out of an edge lit set. And believe me, this 6200 gives you TOP edge lit performance, of that there can be no doubt at all. If you can afford to spend another 2 thousand dollars on a full array local dimming LED TV then by all means do so, but if you are looking for the best value and picture in a very thin edge lit HDTV, then LG is simply the best in that department bar none!

I was just watching a PAL Columbo DVD (an old 1971 episode) and was thinking to myself about how great this TV can handle standard DVD resolution. A good trick is to engage the Mpeg Noise reduction to the "LOW" setting (found in the Picture options sub menu) and make sure your super resolution is turned on. I have been able to get near HD results from standard DVD'd doing this. Great digital tool box in this TV and at no extra charge!

I am a huge LG supporter. This is the 3rd LG LED 47 inch TV in 2 years. I have been impressed since day one with both the picture quality, amount of features and mature well thought out software implementation provided. The functionality and maturity of the software control systems are a MAJOR plus with LG. This is not a Beta tester product. Everything has been well thought out and executed to give you the highest quality performance. Things work the way they should, due largely to extensive research and development and TESTING on LG's part BEFORE they ship their products to you.

Bottom line: This LG looks, sounds and works the way you WANT it to!
At the current price, the LG 47LM6200 represents one of the very top values in HDTV today. Read my caveats at the very end of this review, but otherwise you just can't beat this TV for the price. IT currently resides in the master bedroom , connected to a Fios HD DVR and Oppo Blu Ray player but could easily be the center of ANY living room entertainment center or home theater set-up. I truly believe it smokes the competition and as such I recommend it very highly!
*** Check customer images for a few PICS I uploaded showing how this TV looks in the 'real world' !

In the interest of full disclosure and fair play I am going to include a small list of shortcomings that befall ALL edge lit HDTV's. This is the same thing I posted at the end of my LG 7600 review and it is also applicable to THIS model.

PLEASE READ ON IF YOU ARE TECHNICALLY MINDED and SUPER PICKY about your VIDEO:
***A word about Flashlighting, Vertical Banding, Clouding and Dirty Screen Effect. These are the artifacts or 'defects' that plague ALL edge lit LCD/LED panels. Some brands are better than others for keeping them at bay. The exact same model of TV may vary widely from unit to unit. My TV may have more artifacts present while another may not.

Basically you need to evaluate your own TV for what you might consider an 'acceptable' level of any or all of these things. By the very nature of an edge lit displays design you just can not escape this, but manufacturing tolerances vary greatly and although you may need to possibly return one or more units you can eventually end up with one you can live with.

The flashlighting on this 6200 is VERY slight, but it IS there and more noticeable during certain types of program material. Keeping your backlight down in the 50-55 range with your contrast in the 85 to 90ish range will GREATLY diminish any flash lighting you may experience. On horizontal pans of light background material you WILL see Vertical banding of varying degrees. I also have SOME dirty screen effect (Google it) and just a BIT of clouding depending on the program material. This is NOT a product defect, but to be expected with an edge lit LED HDTV. Again, it is very slight and not overly noticeable to most people.

Just be aware that ALL these things are inherent in Edge Lit displays. If you just can't live with them (in my case, hardly ANY but still....) then you need to consider a plasma or a full array backlit LCD/LED not an edge lit TV. Also, THOSE types of TVs ALSO have problems, just different ones. (halos, screen uniformity issues, stuck pixels, buzzing, excess heat, burn in, etc.)

BOTTOM LINE: With the exception of possibly the new Sharp ELITE models ( more than 5k to start) there is currently no such thing as a perfect display. Do not set your expectations higher than the technology will allow for. I am VERY pleased with this 6200. It offers an increased level of fine detail that was not present in my Pioneer Kuro Plasma from 4 years ago. The picture quality is on par with my LG 7600 , a TV costing a good 400 dollars more. The color accuracy is REALLY good and motion handling extremely good!

A word about adjusting your picture: As a rule of thumb, RESIST THE URGE to put your backlight to 100! The mistake many people make while trying to get a good picture is not understanding how to properly find the 'sweet spot' on their TV settings. You want to leave yourself plenty of 'headroom' and not clip the visual dynamic range and end up with everything looking positively radioactive!

Put your backlight down around 50 and crank up the contrast to around 85 , and play with your brightness control so that things are neither too dark or washed out. The more brightness you use, the more color intensity is needed, but adjust them in SMALL increments and test them on all types of material. Your cable box/dvr will need a different setting from your Blu Ray player. Every device sends a differently calibrated signal with different ideas of what constitutes a 'nominal' value. I STRONGLY urge you to invest in the Disney Worlds of Wonder, Digital Video Essentials or the Spears and Munsil calibration disc. Do the best job you can , then let the electronics 'burn in' for around 100 hours or so and do it again. It is a tedious process but you will be rewarded with the best picture quality on your block and a much more enjoyable viewing experience! I am currently enjoying overall the BEST picture on ANY HDTV I have ever owned and can thank the Spears and Munsil disc for much of it.

**As always, there ARE a small % of tech failures in electronics and purchasing an extended warranty would be a smart move as no matter how expensive something is, electronics DO fail and at the worst possible times.

Thanks for reading my review and ENJOY your new LG 6200. For the money, it can not be beat! Seriously!

Samsung PN60E550 60-Inch 1080p 600Hz 3D Slim Plasma HDTV (Black) (Electronics) newly tagged "1080p"

**Have only had the set for 4 days, still tweaking settings**

TheSamsung PN51E550 51-Inch 1080p 600 Hz 3D Slim Plasma HDTV (Black)

I purchased this set after returning an LG LED 47 inch Cinema 3D set, the problem I had with the LG set was the sports and HD in general looked really washed out and messy; after several days of tweaking the settings nothing seemed to help. I then stopped researching LED's and jumped to researching new model Plasma's. I'm an owner of an older Panasonic 720P 50 inch plasma that I purchased from Fry's for less than $600 like 4-5 years ago and I felt it was time to upgrade. After researching the options within my budget the Samsung appealed to me because of the 600hz motion drive (sports in mind) and the Cinema Smooth features for Blu-Ray movies - the 3D and 2 free glasses was a bonus and so I pulled the trigger and went for it.

Shipping:
I had to schedule an appointment with Pilot shipping services and I had to wait about 6-7 days until my set arrived. I was able to get the set 1 day early, called them early morning to see if they had my item and they were able to reschedule to a earlier date. Packaged arrived prefect with no issues whatsoever.

Now for an actual review of some content I have tried on this set so far. My first post was more of a calling out for some help with an issue I noticed when watching Hockey (I will get into it in my review) with the intentions of coming back and updating my review which is what I'm doing now.

HD Sports:
The first thing I tried on this set was the HD Sports - Mainly Basketball and Hockey. I'm currently a TW cable subscriber and using a Motorola cable box that supports 1080i using a "Premium" HDMI cable utilizing the first HDMI slot on the set. The basketball game looked decent but the picture could use tweaking but out of the box it was decent. I noticed some motion blur and some artifacting when the players moved up and down the court. The colors stood out, and they looked very good, not some washed out mess like the previous set I had purchased and returned. The next day, I tested my set with Hockey and here is where I noticed the odd issues with the brightness. The television set has tons of features and options available for the end user to tweak and adjust which I truly love. I made sure that all eco settings, energy saving settings and auto brightness settings were turned off and they were. While watching the hockey game, I noticed that the brightness or the cell lighting of the actual screen would auto brighten and darken when the camera moved up and down the ice following the players. This is something I was not able to fix, I tried everything I could think of and finally contacted Samsung for some help. After talking with Samsung they're fix was to Factory Reset The Settings....I LOL'd at this and moved on the research and attempt to fix this problem my self (which I have not yet, still researching). One thing I did notice is the preset I'm currently using "Standard" has the energy star logo next it which is leading me to believe that the preset might force energy saving features even though I have set them to off. Overall the Sports look great, the set may require some tweaking depending on your setup but out of the box, the picture quality for HD programming is very nice.

Blu-Ray viewing PS3 using HDMI:
As soon as I got my TV, the setup was a breeze, since all of my components are using HDMI, it was really easy to get everything connected but I ran into some problems with my PS3 picture to actually show up on the screen. At first I was using the third HDMI slot on the set, while my Xbox 360 was using the second. The set would recognize my PS3 and it would show up in the source list but the picture was not coming on. After resetting my PS3 video setting by simply holding down the power button for 5-7 seconds - it still would not come on. I started to get nervous, I went online but did not find many answers, maybe a few posts about it but it all went back to resetting your PS3 video settings which didn't work for me. I refreshed the source list using the tools button and the UI and still nothing. I shut the television off and the PS3, unplugged the HDMI from the set and replaced it to the second slot and move my Xbox to the third slot, turned the PS3 on and my TV and bang it recognized it. Not sure what the problem was but moving it to the second + resetting the ps3 worked like a charm.

Now came the time to test movies, mainly blu-rays. I tested a range of movies that I have in my collection - Star Wars, Scott Pilgrim and Batman (to name a few). Out of the box, with zero tweaking, I was not really impressed but I knew that I can really get the picture quality and a higher level with all the nice features and tweaking options available on this set. After some minor tweaking and turning Cinema Smooth on, I started to notice a slight difference. The action scenes were a bit smoother, the blacks were looking really nice but the whites could have used some more help. I stopped tweaking for a while and just sat down and watched the flick and I must say I was Impressed but I kind of wanted to have what people call "The soap opera effect". I feel the cinema smooth feature doesn't add too much to picture quality but just enough to make it pop. Overall, I'm enjoying the set for watching movies, with some minor tweaking you can get the set to look good but with some advanced tweaking you can really make the picture quality look very nice.

I went ahead and purchased the Disney WoW calibration disc and it arrived just in time for me to tweak the settings even more - if you want an easy tweaking guide, get this Blu-Ray on Amazon. It's a nice disc to have handy so you can attempt to get the best possible picture out of your new baby :).

Gaming:
I am a gamer at heart, I own a ton of video games and have from old school to new school gaming console's in my collection. I'm a big fan of run and gun games, FPS, Action and Adventure games with the occasional RPG. I have not really gotten into gaming that much on this set but have tried two games so far - Battlefield 3 on my Ps3 and Modern Warfare 3 on my Xbox 360. Modern Warfare 3 played really well, the details and backgrounds were okay and the picture could use tweaking and sharpness tuning but overall the smoothness was noticeable and I was very satisfied. Battlefield 3 on my Ps3 on the other hand did not look so good. I was just done tweaking my ps3 settings and my set for movies so the gaming did not look good because it was set up for movies and not games. After playing a few rounds with my current settings, I then went into the menus and turned on the gaming mode which turns up the contrast to full blast and the cell lighting as well. While playing a few rounds in "Gaming mode" the only difference I noticed is that the menus responded much quicker in-game and the menu on the television set as well. I'm pretty satisfied with the smoothness in games but my intentions are to tweak it because gaming is a whole other monster and will require some love. Overall - the blacks, smoothness look really good on this set when gaming and with some adjustments you can really get your games to look fantastic.

I will definitely come back in a few more days to update my post with some more gaming and of course the 3D and the apps which I have not touched yet.

Lastly I want to say that I'm pretty satisfied with my purchase but for now will have to give it 4 stars and here's why. Only 3 HDMI slots are available and I'm using all 3 which leaves little room to add components like a receiver or soundbar; I would love to have had at least 1 more HDMI slot for this reason being able to add. Another reason why is the picture quality for sports and gaming. With the weirdness of the auto brightness and the BF3 not looking all that great this also factored into the 4 star rating.

If you're looking for a set under $1000 with tons of features, 600hz and 3D, this is the way to go. I love the options that are available, Cinema Smooth is a very good feature and the UI is pretty easy to use.

Update 5/26:

I was watching Super 8 on blu-ray last night and I noticed some odd issues when the television set transitioned to credits at the end of the movie. Basically, when the screen when black then to text then back again to black; the television began to flicker like if the television wanted to shut off. I did that for quite some time and I quit out of the movie because I thought It was going to burn out. Contacted Samsung and they're blaming my PS3 Slim or Monster HDMI cable.

Update 6/5:

As much as I loved how HD Cable looked on this set, I have returned it back to amazon due to problems that came up after a few weeks of use. These can be small, picky issues but they bothered me so much that I had to return the set.

1. This I already mentioned in an update here or the original review - Brightness pops when watching hockey. I could not take it anymore, the screen was starting to quickly flash every time there was action. I noticed this a little for Basketball but very noticeable in Hockey. The brightness would automatically dim or return to bright levels randomly.
2. Fade to black problems when watching Blu Ray movies, the screen on the set will start to flash on and off. I ran into this problem when watching Thor and Super8.
3. Buzzing sound started at a certain level and distance, close up you can't hear a thing but at a distance, the noise is noticeable.

Sharp LC80LE844U 80-inch 3D LED TV (Electronics) newly tagged "1080p"

I was waiting for this 2012 model TV since I saw it at CES expo, because this 80 inch is the largest 240hz 3d TV so far. I didn't expected this TV to release in March, 2012.

Anyways I bought it from Amazon via Paul's TV for $4472+tax (Los angeles tax=8.75%). Cost me total of $4863.57 with free "white glove" fast delivery. Ordered on Saturday March 31st, and got it delivered on Monday April 2nd, barely just like next day delivery.

Considering myself a smart shopper, I actually did some research for the price check. All other places were $1000 or more even at my favorite Frys electronics store, but I still went to Frys electronics to see this TV in action, but Frys personnel said it hasn't been put on display yet, as it's been barely 3 days since they recieved this model. Anyhow I told them at Amazon it's cheaper price, and they were just amazed! to see the price difference. The have to call their manager to match it up. Finally they were able to match it up but they came up with delivery fee of $75.00. I still wanted to go with it but somehow I just remembered that being a Chase freedom credit card customer, I get an additional 5% cash back on purchases made from Amazon.com for the first quarter of 2012. So I end up buying at amazon.com for bigger savings and free shipping with white glove delivery.

Next day amazon bumped up the price for this TV. Lucky enough, I saved ridiculously $1000 just in overnight. I bet you they realized that they were selling the TV for a cheaper price than any other competitors.

Let's get to the point of Cons and Pros of this TV discussing some key features and comparing with my other Samsung 55inch 8000 led series of 2010 model.

Pros: It plays MKV format out of the box. Built in WiFi. Web browser. Dedicated button for Netflix on remote. Hulu plus,YouTube with HD feature, Vudu, etc. Active 3D not like other 3D TV manufacturers which use passive technology. It's 240hz and motion plus to 480Hz, with contrast Ratio of 1:10 million. DLNA certified. More speaker output power of an additional 15 Watts of Bass as compared to all other LED TV manufacturers.

Cons: It won't connect to portable Hard drive via USB. It only connects to electric powered hard drive and flash memory sticks (as written in instruction manual). When watching over the air channels via HD antenna, it won't give you detailed description of the TV program you are watching except the name of the program. It won't give you any info of the TV episode program in advance, that what is going to come next unlike my Samsung TV does. When using DLNA networking, it won't play MKV files. It only plays MKV files via when using USB port but not with portable hard drive as I said above.

Rest if you want to buy any HDMI cables, or wall mount brackets, then I suggest you to buy at [...]. They are simply the cheapest.

Any suggestions or questions are most welcomed.

Yamaha's SCENE with HDMI CEC functionality enhances operating convenience when the BD-A1010 is teamed with an AVENTAGE series receiver. Pressing the SCENE BD/DVD button on the receiver's remote control turns on power to both units and starts disc playback (of previously inserted disc). The receiver's remote unit can also be used to control play, stop, skip, and other functions.

Yamaha BD-A1010 The BD-A1010 is a perfect match to the AVENTAGE line of receivers

The stylish aluminum front panel appearance matches Yamaha's AVENTAGE line of receivers, so your system will have a neat, uniform look.

With Yamaha's control app, available separately in the iTunes store, you can use your iPhone or iPad to control your Yamaha player.

An on-screen graphic user interface (GUI) makes the BD-A1010 easy to use.

RS-232C and IR ports make the BD-A1010 easy to integrate into a custom installation for convenient remote control operation. Control4 certification ensures expected performance and ease of custom configuration.

1080p is the highest level of video resolution, and the BD-A1010 can output these video signals directly to a receiver via the HDMI output. This provides a much sharper picture, with smoother motion. The BD-A1010 can also playback DVDs, photos and personal video data at 1080p.

The Yamaha BD-A1010 also supports x.v.Color and Deep Color compatibility for even more color definition.

Go beyond the disc with streaming content from your favorite Internet sources. When connected to your home broadband network, the BD-A1010 can bring you entertainment from Netflix, Blockbuster, YouTube, and more. This player is a certified DLNA client, so it's guaranteed to play well with your home network.

In addition to web content, two USB ports (front and rear) let you play your MP3, WAV, AAC, and WMA music files, as well as view your JPEG photos. You can even play a slideshow of your favorite photos with MP3 background music. Play high-definition DivX Plus HD video files, as well as AVCHD, WMV, MOV, MP4, and MPG files.

The digital audio signals from high bit-rate audio signals (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio) are output directly from the player to the receiver (via an HDMI cable), without conversion to PCM. By using a receiver with HD audio decoders, the sound you hear will be exactly the same as the originally recorded material.

Yamaha BD-A1010

This receiver features Pure Direct for high sound quality stereo CD playback through analog audio output. It also supports up to 7.1-channel analog audio output as well as multi-channel linear PCM output via HDMI, so the BD-A1010 is fit for a wide range of audio applications.

Blu-ray Discs are one of the best ways to take advantage of the great entertainment that high-definition video and audio make possible. Since a single-layer disc holds 25GB of data, a Blu-ray Disc stores five times more data than a standard DVD, providing superb picture resolution and surround sound. The BD-A1010 offers compatibility with the latest Blu-ray Disc formats including 3D, and the finest audio and video quality as well as the latest features like Picture-in-Picture (Secondary Video/Audio) and Virtual Package.

In addition to supporting playback of Blu-ray 3D content, use the BD-A1010 to connect to the internet to access the fun and informative features that BD-Live provides. With this BD-Live player and a BD-Live compatible title, viewers can enjoy special online benefits and features that might include extra downloadable content, online bonus features, live transactions, release updates and social interaction centered on their favorite films.

Secondary Video/Audio for Enhanced Commentary and Information: Secondary Video lets you view a smaller picture inside the main picture (with compatible Blu-ray Discs). Secondary Audio lets you hear the smaller picture's audio as well. Both can be selected from the BD-A1010 remote control.

Virtual Package for New Entertainment Possibilities with USB Memory: This feature lets you combine information from a Blu-ray Disc with local storage information on a USB drive to enjoy additional content and services as they become available.

ASUS N55SL-DS71 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) (Personal Computers) newly tagged "1080p"

This notebook PC is aimed at the gaming, entertainment use and though not inexpensive, it contains a lot of power in a very small format. The components are choice, so I'd rate this as a luxury laptop. It weighs just a shade under 6 lbs, and is 15 1/2 by 10 1/2 inches with a thickness of just over an inch, so it's very small in size.

Features:

CPU--this is a multi-core, Intel 2.2 GHz Core i7-2670QM, there are two of them. 8 GB RAM (2 x 4GB)

Media: Blu-Ray drive, HD display

Input: Keyboard and touchpad

Expansion slots: none

Communications: Gigabit Ethernet LAN and Blu-Tooth 3.0 802.11b/g/n built in, antennae built in.

Sound: Bang & Olufson speakers, mic and headphones outlet

Camera: 2 megapixel

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Edition; included software is Microsoft Office 2010 suites but requiring a key for activation.

Graphics Interface: NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M with 2 GB DDR3 SDRAM

Hard Drive: 750 GB

Warranty: 2 year limited, 1 year accident coverage

Performance: This is clearly aimed at the gaming and entertainment market--great sound, wonderful graphics display and power enough for games, but usable as a PC for general applications (word processing, spreadsheets, internet access, email) as well. The battery is a lithium ion six-cell unit, but with all the power output for graphics, media and sound, you get about 3 or 4 hours of battery time, which is average but not bad.

Accessories: For gamers and blu-ray films, there is a bundled sub-woofer to add to your enjoyment of the sound. SonicMaster makes a small, tin-can sized unit that gives those deep bass sounds that add so much to exciting viewing or playing.

Bottom line: Very powerful, sleek, attractive game and entertainment PC with enough power, sound and display capability to make a very enjoyable experience in a very small format.

Vizio M3D470KD 47-Inch 240 Hz Class Theater 3D Edge Lit Razor LED LCD HDTV with VIZIO Internet Apps - Black (Electronics) newly tagged "1080p"

PROs:
The picture is excellent, both regular TV and 3-D, after adjusting and tweaking the default settings. Picture quality and price are two big reasons for buying a particular brand of TV. Considering the reasonable price, this Vizio TV is a bargain.

3D:
The 3D is amazing. The screen disappears and becomes a window you are looking through. Not only that but in some scenes objects appear to be floating in front of the TV, by as much as 30 inches! Incredible! Great job, Vizio! Can't wait for the X-Games and the Olympics, both in 3D this year.

CONs:
My cons are mainly annoyances and things requiring getting used to.

Several are what I consider design defects by Vizio.

The Remote:
The keys are tiny. Definitely not suitable for anyone with large fingers. The entire remote measures 2" X 6". The section with the keys on the front measures 2" X 4", not much room for all the keys on it.

The "3D" key is almost lost at the bottom of the number keys instead of being prominent like the "V" key. The 3D key is nearly impossible to find in the dark as the keys are not backlit.

I wonder if the word "Vizio" is adapted from a word meaning "Patience." There is a very slow response time between key press and TV reaction. Before I realized this I pressed keys too quickly and the TV froze up. The keys failed to respond and even the manual buttons on the side of the TV failed to respond. I had to unplug the TV to get it to reboot. I have since learned patience.

User Guide:
Starts you off with internet settings, rather than TV.

Not printed. The startup guide is marginally useful. The in-depth operational details are in the online manual (not even a CD provided) and require the user to download and print out the manual. You would think that considering the cost of the TV they would spend the nominal amount to give you a printed manual.

The manual refers to a TV mode of "Sensio" but fails to explain what it is.

TV:
Do not be concerned if the initial TV picture color looks, well, awful.

This TV requires much fine tuning through many levels of submenus to get decent color. I enjoy playing with settings and submenus so it was an enjoyable experience for me. Non-techies will have a harder time.

It is very disappointing that the TV fails to recognize which type of 3D is incoming. There are two flavors of 3D signal, "above and below" or "side by side". This requires the user to go to the 3D menu and select the correct 3D source. A tedious four step process considering how slowly the TV responds to each key press. Then when you want to return to 2D TV you must go through the process again. A quicker method not found in the manual is to locate and press the tiny 3D key at the bottom left of the alphabet. I am hoping that Vizio will come up with a software enhancement that can recognize the type of 3D signal.

This TV is definitely not "Instant On". It is "Press and Wait". When you turn on the TV it takes several seconds for even the Vizio logo to light up, then an additional approximately 15 seconds for a picture to appear.

Be aware that on some key pressed the screen will go black. Not to worry. It is working on your key press and will eventually bring the picture back with your change. It would be helpful if there were an onscreen icon of some sort showing that the TV is working, such as that little moving circle that PCs use to communicate "working".

Internet Ready:
This TV is internet ready. It accepts either a wireless or wired internet connection. There are several apps that are preloaded on the TV. Many more are available. Many of the apps require a paid subscription to an internet provider. You can do streaming video or movies easily once the connection is made. YouTube is free.

There is no internet browser app, nor an email app. I will miss both.

The largest button on the remote, the "V" key, connects you to the app display. I have enough movies through my Comcast DVR that I won't use this much, but it does work. The wireless antenna is robust inasmuch as my router is some distance away from the set and although my PC sometimes has trouble getting the signal at that distance, the TV has no such trouble.

One design deficiency IMHO is that the V internet button is huge while the 3D button is tiny. Both should be at least the same size. It is annoying that the button I don't use is right there while I have to search for the 3D button.

The reverse of the remote is a full keyboard. Super convenient for use with the internet apps.

Packaging:
The packaging of the TV is excellent. Styrofoam sections are cut out and framed to support the TV without it touching the sides of the sturdy box. You should save the box in case you need to ship the TV somewhere for service (or to return to Amazon). My suggestion is to take notes, or better yet, pictures, as you remove the styrofoam pieces and the TV from the box so that you will be able to repackage the set correctly.

CONCLUSION:

I bought this TV rather than another make I was interested in because of Amazon's excellent offer of free shipping and a 30 day trial and free return shipping if I am not satisfied with it. I didn't know if 3D TV would be worth it so this was a no risk way to try it out.

We are getting used to the idiosyncrasies of the TV. I gave this TV four stars because of them. If the remote were better it would rate five stars.

I plan on keeping the TV. My wife loves the TV's picture, both 3D and regular. She tells me if the TV goes, I go too.

So we will happily keep the TV, unless, of course, something bad happens in the three weeks remaining in my trial period. If I return it for some as yet unknown reason, I will update this review.

The TV picture is excellent. The 3D amazing.

Go for it!

REVIEW UPDATE 6/29/2012:

We are halfway through our 30 day trial of this TV.

The picture continues to be excellent, both regular and 3D. Our new record for the distance an object appears to be floating in front of the screen stands at four feet!

We have gotten used to the "annoyances" I mentioned earlier. It didn't take long. Now using the remote is automatic and even the time delays are no longer noticeable.

I have learned a shortcut method for changing the TV modes, from 2D to 3D. Instead of using the cumbersome "Menu" button, I place my finger on the smooth empty space at the bottom of the remote and slide the finger up to the tiny 3D key at the bottom left of the numbers pad. Then repeated presses of the 3D key and a tap of the "OK" key switches between modes.

So unless something unexpected happens during the remainder of the trial, this TV is here to stay. If need be I will update this review.

LG E2290V-SN 21.5-Inch Premium Super Slim Widescreen LED LCD Monitor - Metal (Personal Computers) newly tagged "1080p"

If you're the kind of person who doesn't want to pay a premium for style, then you might find this monitor a tad expensive. There are many others with the same features, resolution, and image quality for $100 less than what I paid ($269.99). That said, it truly is beautiful, powered on or off. Personally, I like style a lot, but even so, I find it a little expensive. But I got it and don't regret it. This thing is right out of a design school (and in fact it probably is).

I would like one feature that it doesn't have: the ability to raise/lower the screen in addition to tilt forward/back. But as it's at a fairly comfortable height on my desk, this fortunately isn't a problem.

One other very minor nit: the touch-sensitive on/off switch, located on the top right corner of the base, is a bit too easy to touch accidentally. I'll have to get in the habit of keeping my paws (and those of my cats - no kidding!) away from that spot.

Otherwise, this is a very nice monitor and a thing of beauty. It would be right at home in the most luxurious office.

Nice job, LG.

I would ordinarily take away a star for the high price and the minor complaints. But the price could change for another buyer, so I figure my review will just cover the product without regard to the price. If I run into any technical problems, I might come back and lower my rating. I do plan to calibrate it with a colorimeter for graphics work, and if that presents any problems, I'll come back and report on that.

Update:

I calibrated the display with a Spyder 3 Pro colorimeter, and it calibrated perfectly and really looks great. But this surfaced another minor nit: the out-of-the-box settings are quite far from accurate color (as are many displays, though not all - this is so that they make your eyes pop in a showroom environment). I could tell that was the case when I turned it on for the first time, and fooled around with the settings to get it closer to what I wanted, but you unfortunately still need an actual calibration to get correct color. The expert-mode calibration sequence on a Mac will get you to usable settings, though, without spending the money on a colorimeter.
